Carefully Planned Festival

Quick blog of our highligths from Carefully Planned this weekend! We had a swell time despite the rain and were especially pleased to see so many women on this years bill.
Here are a couple of our highlights...

Halo Halo describe themselves as "dance-sinawi-pop", since I'd never heard of sinawi music before I did some searching and ended up in a (very much recommended) Youtube rabbit hole.

Brother-sister drum-bass noise duo, absolutely incredible to watch as they both seemed to be having an amazing time (as well as kicking up an almighty racket)! When we walked in their gig at Gullivers they were "channelling the spirit of Leo Sayer".

"ONSIND is a DIY, feminist, vegan, semi-acoustic pop punk band from Pity Me, Durham." They forgot "awesome".

Bands we missed but wish we'd got to see! September Girls, Bad Grammar, Big Joan

Typical Girls Night In at Fuel

Last Thursday was our first 'Night In' of female fronted folk / acoustic / soul music. Despite getting a last minute cancellation from one of the bands, the wonderful SEA stepped in and saved the day with just enough time to soundcheck!

Ruby Tingle performing her swampy ballads

We had an amazing time and raised loads of money for the Manchester Womens Aid! We sold out the upstairs room of Fuel so thanks a bunch to everyone who came down and sorry if you couldn't get in!

We will very likely be running some more of these nights at Fuel in the new year so keep your eyes peeled!

Monday 23 September 2013

Typical Girls - 21st September at Star & Garter

Thanks to everyone who came down!!

Our next night is our Typical Girls Night In at Fuel Café on Thursday 17th October featuring Choo Choo Trains, Ruby Tingle and The Dyr Sister.

Typical Girls in September and October

Our next Typical Girls night will be on Saturday 21st October at The Star & Garter!

Featuring No Ditching, an all girl DIY pop-punk band featuring members of Martha from Pity Me, Durham.

Plus more bands announced soon!

After the bands we'll have Typical Girls DJs plus special guest Marylin Misandry playing female fronted music for dancing til late.

We're also having a quieter midweek Night In at Fuel Café on Thursday 16th October, get attending here!

Wednesday 4 September 2013

Typical Girls at The Star & Garter

The second Typical Girls night, this time at one of our favourite pubs The Star & Garter, went super well and included amazing bands, crowdsurfing and a mass dance to Sugababes.

To start the night we had  Bernard + Edith and Factory Acts, two electronic two-pieces!

We had Sugar Paper Zine  and The Shrieking Violet (wo)manning the zine stall. Sugar Paper were debuting their second Poor Lass Zine as well as plenty of Sugar Papers including the newest, #11 (pictured below), which I absolutely love the cover for! The Shrieking Violet was also selling their very recently released 21st issue (below).

Here are some fabulous phone photos of the dancing after the bands (we're getting a photographer for the next TG, we promise!) We had guest DJs including the amazing Judith K from Sheffield's Discord.

We also have this fuzzy video of the Patti Smith dancing for your viewing pleasure.

We had an incredible night and all the profits went to the amazing M.A.S.H. who we've written about on the blog before, here.

We'll be running another disco night in late September  and then a more chilled out midweek night at Fuel on Thursday 17th October. You can click 'attending' for the October night here and we'll update you when the September event is online!

We got some lovely badges made!

It's not long now until our next night at The Star and Garter, so we thought we'd make something special for you all, and so the badges were born!

Past Flyers

Here are some of the flyers for Typical Girls nights from when it lived in Sheffield. These shows happened in (I think) 2010 and featured the very amazing Talk Normal, The Lovely Eggs, Standard Fare (RIP!) and Hotpants Romance. We also organised a really dancey gig for Bearsuit in Sheffield but I can't ind the flyer for it!

What We've Been up to from May - Early August

Time for a bit of catching up! From May to early August we...

Held our first Typical Girls open meeting at Kro Bar.

Talked to the University of Manchester's feminist society, Riveters, about our plans for Typical Girls and how we could network with other Manchester / Salford based feminist groups.

DJ'd at Make Do and Dance at The Thirsty Scholar. Also at Make Do and Dance were the amazing Cherryade Records talking about "How to Start an Indie Label" as well as an open mic and stalls by For Books Sake.

We went on the wonderful All.FM Anything Goes Breakfast Show with Fiona Ledgard. We talked about feminism and Typical Girls as well as playing loads of our favourite female fronted music! You can have a listen to the show here.

Our first night at Wählbar went amazingly well and we raised nearly £500 for Manchester Rape Crisis! We had amazing sets by ILL, Rose Clout and Rachel Whatever as well as a stall by For Books Sake

DJ'd at the afterparty of What It Feels Like, an exhibition of women artists at Bankley Mill Studios. The afterparty was at the Klondyke Club in Levenshulme, a really lovely venue that we'd never been to before! The bands playing the afterparty were great as well, especially the late addition Los Cripis from Argentina!

Started looking for slightly bigger venues for our second night and ended up with the wonderfully DIY friendly Star & Garter.
